Immediate action guide
General Contractor Emergency Action Steps
What to do right now before a general contractor arrives, with clear lines for 911, utility, and contractor calls.
First rule
If there is fire, smoke, shock, collapse risk, gas odor, carbon monoxide alarm, injury, trapped people, or any uncertainty about safety, leave the area and call 911. Use these steps only when you can act from a safe position.
E1
Structural Crack or Sag
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the cracked wall, sagging ceiling, floor, beam, and rooms above or below.
- Move people out of the affected rooms and keep weight off the area.
- Close doors and mark the boundary without touching the damaged member.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call 911 for active movement, then a general contractor or structural engineer.
Do not do this
- - Do not jack, brace, cut, or demolish suspected structural components.
- - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
E2
Water Damage From Above
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the ceiling stain, light fixture, floor below, and room above.
- Keep people out from under the stain if it is bulging, dripping, or near electricity.
- Place a bucket from safe footing and shut off the likely water source if reachable.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call a general contractor and the source trade, such as plumber, roofer, or HVAC.
Do not do this
- - Do not touch wet electrical devices, outlets, cords, panels, or switches.
- - Do not puncture a bulging ceiling unless responders instruct you.
E3
Mold Smell After Renovation
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the renovated room, wall cavities, cabinets, HVAC returns, and damp materials.
- Close the area and stop work that opens walls or moves dusty materials.
- Do not run fans through the area; keep HVAC returns closed if practical and safe.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call a general contractor and restoration pro to find moisture before rebuilding continues.
Do not do this
- - Do not cover odor with paint, flooring, or new drywall before source review.
- - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
E4
Drywall Ceiling Sagging
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the sagging ceiling, light fixtures, furniture, and floor below.
- Clear the room and keep everyone away from beneath the sag.
- Move valuables from the room only from safe edges and shut off nearby lights if wet.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call 911 if collapse seems imminent, then a general contractor and source-trade pro.
Do not do this
- - Do not stand under or push up on sagging drywall.
- - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
E5
Unsafe Opening or Missing Guardrail
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the stair, balcony, floor opening, porch, or work zone.
- Block access immediately and route people through another path.
- Use a stable visible barrier set back from the edge.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call the general contractor and require a secure temporary guard before work resumes.
Do not do this
- - Do not rely on caution tape alone around a fall hazard.
- - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
