About ProFix Directory
ProFix Directory is a free way to find a contractor and check, before you call, whether they hold a real license.
What this site is
ProFix Directory is a free national home-services directory. It lists 600,913 contractors compiled from public records across 51 US jurisdictions, including 486,586 contractor licenses confirmed active against official state boards in 32 states. It also publishes cost medians and ranges drawn from public building permits rather than from surveys. Homeowners pay nothing and are never required to submit a form to see a contractor's phone number.

What we check, and what we don't
The distinction matters more than any badge, so here it is plainly.
We do
- Check license status against the official state board roster in 32 states, and show you what the board says — including when it says the license is expired or suspended.
- Link the official state lookup in all 51 jurisdictions, so you can check us even where we do not hold the roster.
- Publish cost figures computed from public building-permit records, with the sample size.
- Show the original source for every listing, on the listing.
We do not
- Invent a rating. We publish a Trust Score, but it is a transparent sum of public signals — license status, permit history, whether hours and a license link are on file — and every factor and its weight is published. It is not our opinion of a contractor's work, and it is not an average of stars.
- Sell your details to lead brokers, or pass them to anyone outside the trade and area you asked for. When you send a request we route it to at most three matched contractors nearby, we say so on the form before you send it, and it stops there.
- Take payment for placement. Nobody can buy their way up a list here.
- Publish a review we cannot trace to its source.
- Claim a license is verified when we have not actually checked it against a board.
How to check us
You should not have to take our word for any of this. It takes about a minute:
- Open any contractor's page and copy the license number.
- Follow the state board link next to it.
- Paste the number into the board's own search.
- Compare what the board says with what we say.
If they disagree, the board is right and we are wrong — tell us and we will correct it. You can also check a contractor you already have without browsing at all.
Where the data comes from
State licensing boards, county and municipal building-permit records, federal labour statistics, and public business listings. Everything we compute is published as an open dataset with the method alongside it, so anyone can reproduce our numbers or argue with them.
How this site makes money
Three ways, and none of them is your position in a list. Contractors can pay to claim their listing, which gives them a dashboard and the ability to respond — not a higher rank. Contractors can pay for an enquiry a homeowner chose to send them. And some pages carry advertising and affiliate links, which are labeled where they appear. Placement in search results is not, and will not be, for sale.
Reading this site
Built for everyone, designed with older homeowners in mind: large text, large buttons, one-tap calling, no pop-ups, and no dark patterns. Two controls sit at the top of every page — one switches to a larger, simpler view, the other switches between English and Spanish. There is a high-contrast setting in the footer. If your mother can use it without asking for help, we did our job.
Who runs this
ProFix Directory LLC, an Ohio company. We started in Toledo because Toledo deserved better than the ad-stuffed directories that push unverified leads at homeowners, and the standard has not changed since: no invented facts, no fake verification badges, and a clear statement on every profile of what we know and what you still need to confirm yourself. We now cover 51 jurisdictions and 37 trades.
