EV Charger Installer Emergency Action Steps
What to do right now before a ev charger installer arrives, with clear lines for 911, utility, and contractor calls.
First rule
If there is fire, smoke, shock, collapse risk, gas odor, carbon monoxide alarm, injury, trapped people, or any uncertainty about safety, leave the area and call 911. Use these steps only when you can act from a safe position.

Charger Sparking or Smoke
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the charger, cable, vehicle inlet, wall, and breaker panel.
- Stop charging from the vehicle or app if safe, then turn off the charger breaker from dry footing.
- Keep people away from the charger and move combustibles away from the wall.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call 911 for smoke or fire, then an EV charger installer or electrician.
Do not do this
- - Do not unplug a sparking connector by hand or restart charging.
- - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.

Breaker Trips When Charging
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the EV charger, breaker, cable, vehicle, and garage outlet area.
- Leave the breaker off after one trip and stop charging.
- Keep the cable coiled safely away from water and foot traffic.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call an EV charger installer or electrician and report charger model, amperage setting, and trip timing.
Do not do this
- - Do not reset repeatedly, lower settings blindly, or use adapters as a workaround.

Charging Cable Damaged
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the charging cable, connector, vehicle inlet, floor, and wall unit.
- Stop charging and de-energize the charger at the breaker if safe.
- Keep the damaged cable away from water, tires, pets, and children.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call the installer or manufacturer support for cable replacement guidance.

- - Do not tape, splice, drive over, or keep using a damaged charging cable.

Charger Hot to Touch
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the wall charger, plug if present, cable, breaker, and mounting surface.
- Stop charging and turn the charger off without touching hot parts.
- Move combustibles away and let the equipment cool while supervised from a safe distance.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call an EV charger installer before using it again, even if it cools down.

Garage Outlet or Wall Damage
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the outlet, charger mount, drywall, cable path, and vehicle parking space.
- Stop charging and keep the vehicle away from the damaged wall area.
- Turn off the circuit if wiring is exposed or the outlet is loose.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call an EV charger installer or electrician and describe impact, looseness, or water exposure.
Do not do this
- - Do not push a loose charger back onto the wall and resume charging.
