First rule

If there is fire, smoke, shock, collapse risk, gas odor, carbon monoxide alarm, injury, trapped people, or any uncertainty about safety, leave the area and call 911. Use these steps only when you can act from a safe position.

E1

Deck Sagging

Do this now

  1. Move people, pets, and valuables away from the deck surface, posts, beam line, stairs, and doors leading outside.
  2. Get everyone off the deck and lock or block doors that open onto it.
  3. Remove only lightweight items from inside the doorway; leave heavy furniture in place.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call a deck builder or structural pro and describe sag location, posts, and recent loads.

Do not do this

  • - Do not shore, jack, or walk under a sagging deck.
  • - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
E2

Loose Railing

Do this now

  1. Move people, pets, and valuables away from the railing, stairs, deck edge, and walking path.
  2. Stop using the deck edge or stairs served by the loose rail.
  3. Place a visible barrier well back from the edge.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call a deck builder and report which posts, fasteners, or sections move.

Do not do this

  • - Do not tie the railing with rope and keep using the stairs.
  • - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
E3

Stair Tread Failure

Do this now

  1. Move people, pets, and valuables away from the broken tread, stringer, landing, and alternate exit route.
  2. Close the stairs immediately and use another exit.
  3. Mark both top and bottom approaches so nobody steps onto the run.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call a deck builder and mention whether the stair is an emergency exit.

Do not do this

  • - Do not cover a broken tread with a rug or loose board.
  • - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
E4

Deck After Tree Impact

Do this now

  1. Move people, pets, and valuables away from the impact point, railing, ledger, posts, and area under the deck.
  2. Keep everyone off and away from under the deck.
  3. If water enters the house, catch it from inside without stepping onto the deck.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call 911 for collapse risk, then tree service, roofer, and deck builder as needed.

Do not do this

  • - Do not climb a ladder, roof, tree, fence, or damaged structure during the emergency.
  • - Do not cut branches resting on the deck structure.
E5

Ledger Area Leak

Do this now

  1. Move people, pets, and valuables away from the wall where the deck meets the house, ceiling below, and basement rim area.
  2. Keep weight off the deck near the house if staining, softness, or movement appears.
  3. Catch interior drips and divert water away from the deck-wall joint from ground level.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call a deck builder and roofer or siding pro to locate the water path.

Do not do this

  • - Do not pry flashing or remove fasteners during active leakage.
  • - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
