1. The brand is recalled
Federal Pacific 'Stab-Lok' panels (1950–1990) and Zinsco/Sylvania panels (1970s–80s) have known failure modes. Many insurance carriers won't cover homes with these panels still in use. Replacement is non-negotiable. Check the brand label inside the door.
2. Repeated breaker trips on the same circuit
If a single breaker trips weekly, the breaker may be failing. If multiple breakers trip when you use heavy appliances, your panel is undersized — common in 100A panels feeding modern HVAC + electric range + EV. Time for a 200A upgrade.
3. Warm panel or buzzing breakers
Touch the front of the panel cover (don't open it). Warmth = poor connection or overload. Audible buzz from a breaker = failing breaker. Either is a 'call today' sign.
4. Scorch marks or burning smell
Brown discoloration around any breaker or the main feed = arcing damage. Burning-plastic smell from the panel = active arcing. Stop using the panel and call an electrician immediately.
5. Panel is 40+ years old
Most panels are rated for 30–40 years. A working 1980s panel isn't an emergency, but plan for replacement when you next renovate or before adding a major load (EV charger, hot tub, central AC).
Frequently asked
How much does panel replacement cost in Toledo?
$1,800–$2,800 for a 100A → 200A upgrade. Older Federal Pacific replacement on a complex install: $3,500–$5,000. See our cost guide for breakdown.
Can I keep my old panel and just add breakers?
If the panel is full but otherwise sound, an electrician can install a sub-panel or use tandem breakers. If the panel is recalled or showing warning signs, no — replace.
