Columbia Gas — what they do (free)
Investigate gas-smell calls. Locate leaks on the supply side (meter, service line from street). Shut off gas at the meter when needed. Confirm safety before restoring service. They will not repair appliance-side leaks or install lines inside your home.
Private gas tech — what they do (paid)
Repair leaks past the meter. Install or extend gas lines (range, dryer, fireplace, generator). Hook up new water heaters or convert tank to tankless. Pressure-test new lines. Pull permits for any line work.
Order of operations during a leak
Smell gas → leave the house → call Columbia Gas from outside. They come, locate, and shut off if needed. If the leak is past the meter (your responsibility), Columbia Gas tags the line and you call a licensed gas tech to repair. Service is restored after the repair passes inspection.
Frequently asked
Will Columbia Gas charge me for an emergency call?
No. Emergency response (suspected leak, gas smell, meter issue) is always free. They'd rather come for a false alarm than miss a real leak.
How do I know if the leak is on Columbia Gas's side or mine?
If it's between the street and your meter, Columbia Gas. If it's anywhere past the meter (inside the house, between meter and appliance), it's on you. Their inspector will tell you which side after the locate.
