Siding Contractor Emergency Action Steps
What to do right now before a siding contractor arrives, with clear lines for 911, utility, and contractor calls.
First rule
If there is fire, smoke, shock, collapse risk, gas odor, carbon monoxide alarm, injury, trapped people, or any uncertainty about safety, leave the area and call 911. Use these steps only when you can act from a safe position.
E1
Siding Blown Off
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the missing siding, wall sheathing, loose panels, and ground debris.
- Keep people away from loose panels, nails, and areas below hanging siding.
- If rain enters, place towels inside and avoid exterior ladder work.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call a siding contractor and report wall side, exposed sheathing, and active water entry.
Do not do this
- - Do not climb a ladder, roof, tree, fence, or damaged structure during the emergency.
- - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
E2
Water Behind Siding
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the wet siding seam, interior wall, window trim, and outlet locations.
- Keep water away from outlets and stop using affected wall receptacles.
- Catch interior drips and redirect exterior water at ground level if safe.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call a siding contractor and report nearby windows, roof edges, gutters, and vents.
Do not do this

- - Do not peel siding off during active rain.
E3
Loose Panel Hanging
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the hanging panel, walkway, driveway, and wall below.
- Close the walkway below and keep vehicles away from the fall area.
- From ground level, move lightweight debris only if it will not pull more siding loose.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call a siding contractor for safe removal or fastening.
Do not do this
- - Do not climb a ladder, roof, tree, fence, or damaged structure during the emergency.
- - Do not yank hanging siding from below.
E4
Exposed Sheathing After Storm
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the exposed sheathing, housewrap, wall cavity, and interior rooms behind it.
- Keep the interior wall area clear and do not touch wet insulation or wiring.
- Use interior towels for drips; exterior temporary covering should wait for safe weather.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call a siding contractor and send wide photos of exposure and nearby openings.
Do not do this
- - Do not climb a ladder, roof, tree, fence, or damaged structure during the emergency.
- - Do not touch wet electrical devices, outlets, cords, panels, or switches.
E5
Dryer Vent or Exhaust Blocked by Siding
Do this now
- Move people, pets, and valuables away from the exterior vent, dryer, exhaust grille, and utility room.
- Stop using the dryer or exhaust appliance until the vent path is clear.
- Keep the area clear and watch for heat, odor, moisture, or alarm signals.
- Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
- Call a siding contractor and appliance or HVAC pro if the appliance was run while blocked.
Do not do this
- - Do not run vented appliances with a blocked or covered exterior termination.
- - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
