First rule

If there is fire, smoke, shock, collapse risk, gas odor, carbon monoxide alarm, injury, trapped people, or any uncertainty about safety, leave the area and call 911. Use these steps only when you can act from a safe position.

E1

Sewage Backing Up

Do this now

  1. Move people, pets, and valuables away from the lowest drains, toilets, tubs, laundry, and basement floor.
  2. Stop all water use in the home, including laundry, showers, dishwasher, and flushing.
  3. Close doors to contaminated rooms and keep clean items out of the area.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call a septic contractor and a restoration pro if sewage entered living space.

Do not do this

  • - Do not use chemical drain openers, keep flushing, or pump water into the yard.
  • - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
E2

Septic Alarm Sounding

Do this now

  1. Move people, pets, and valuables away from the alarm panel, tank area, pump chamber, and fixtures.
  2. Reduce water use immediately and silence only the audible alarm if the panel allows it.
  3. Keep people away from tank lids and wet soil around the system.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call a septic contractor and report light color, alarm time, recent rain, and power status.

Do not do this

  • - Do not open tank lids or reset pumps repeatedly.
  • - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.

  2. Keep vehicles, people, and pets off the wet area.
  3. Reduce household water use and redirect roof or surface water away if safe.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call a septic contractor and describe odor, standing water, rain, and recent pumping.

Do not do this

  • - Do not drive across, dig in, or cover a saturated drain field.
  • - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.

Septic Tank Lid Damage

Do this now

  1. Move people, pets, and valuables away from the tank lid, access riser, surrounding soil, and yard path.
  2. Block the area immediately and keep children, pets, and vehicles away.
  3. Place a large visible barrier around the lid without standing on it.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call a septic contractor for secure cover replacement before the area is used again.

Do not do this

  • - Do not lift, probe, or stand on a damaged septic lid.
  • - Do not re-enter while alarms, odors, sparks, smoke, water, or movement continue.
E5

Toilets Slow After Heavy Rain

Do this now

  1. Move people, pets, and valuables away from bathrooms, basement drains, the yard over the septic system, and sump discharge.
  2. Pause laundry, long showers, dishwasher use, and repeated flushing.
  3. Check for backup at low drains and keep towels ready outside contaminated areas.
  4. Photograph safely, note the time, and save temporary-material receipts.
  5. Call a septic contractor if slow drains persist, gurgle, smell, or back up.

Do not do this

  • - Do not add drain chemicals or keep forcing water through the system.
