Home emergency playbook
Window shattered and home is exposed
Conservative first steps for homeowners before cleanup, repair, or contractor dispatch. When safety is uncertain, leave and call first.
Immediate steps
- Keep people away from the glass field and put on shoes, gloves, and eye protection before approaching.
- If the break may be from crime, photograph and call police before moving objects near the window.
- Remove only loose glass that could fall inward, then cover the opening with plywood or heavy plastic from a safe position.
- Call a glass or window contractor for board-up and sash, insulated-glass, or frame repair.
Do not do this
- Do not walk barefoot or let pets cross carpet where tiny glass may remain.
- Do not lean on a cracked sash or frame while taping plastic.
- Do not vacuum large shards with a household vacuum that can tear bags or hoses.
Who to call
- Call 911 if anyone is injured, trapped, in medical distress, or if fire, shock, collapse, or active crime is present.
- Call the utility emergency line before private repair when gas, electric service, public water, sewer main, or buried lines may be involved.
- Call a qualified window and door professional after immediate life-safety and utility hazards are controlled.
Damage mitigation
- Use cardboard to scoop glass into a rigid container and tape the container closed.
- Cover the opening from the exterior side if weather allows, so rain sheds away from the wall.
- Save photos showing impact direction, frame damage, damaged blinds, and water entry.
Prevention
- Trim branches and secure patio furniture before high winds.
- Use safety film, storm panels, or impact-rated glass where exposure is high.
- Repair stuck sashes and rotten frames before they fail during storms.
Typical cost band
Usually low to moderate for standard glass; high for custom windows, frames, safety glass, or water intrusion.
Insurance note
Glass breakage may depend on cause such as windborne debris, vandalism, or accidental impact; document before cleanup and keep board-up receipts.
