Home emergency playbook
Wasp or hornet nest in a wall void
Conservative first steps for homeowners before cleanup, repair, or contractor dispatch. When safety is uncertain, leave and call first.
Immediate steps
- Keep people away from the room, exterior wall, or siding gap where insects are entering.
- Close nearby windows and doors, and move pets indoors away from the flight path.
- Mark the outside entry point from a distance so the pest pro can find the wall void.
- Call pest control promptly, especially if anyone is allergic, stings are occurring indoors, or the nest is near an entry.
Do not do this
- Do not seal the entry hole while the colony is active; insects may move indoors.
- Do not spray household insecticide into wall cavities, outlets, or soffits from a ladder.
- Do not swat or vacuum wasps indoors if people with sting allergies are present.
Who to call
- Call 911 if anyone is injured, trapped, in medical distress, or if fire, shock, collapse, or active crime is present.
- Call the utility emergency line before private repair when gas, electric service, public water, sewer main, or buried lines may be involved.
- Call a qualified pest-control or wildlife professional after immediate life-safety and utility hazards are controlled.
Damage mitigation
- If a sting causes breathing trouble, throat swelling, faintness, or widespread hives, call 911.
- Keep interior lights low near the room at night so insects are less drawn inside.
- After treatment, have damaged siding, trim gaps, or wall openings sealed.
Prevention
- Seal siding gaps, utility penetrations, fascia openings, and torn screens after nests are inactive or removed.
- Keep outdoor trash sealed and clean food residue near patios and grills.
- Schedule early-season inspection where nests recur near entries or rooflines.
Typical cost band
Usually low to moderate for treatment; higher if wall, siding, or soffit repairs are needed.
Insurance note
Pest treatment is typically maintenance, but wall damage from removal should be documented with photos and the pest-control invoice.
