Home emergency playbook

Wasp or hornet nest in a wall void

Conservative first steps for homeowners before cleanup, repair, or contractor dispatch. When safety is uncertain, leave and call first.

Immediate steps

  1. Keep people away from the room, exterior wall, or siding gap where insects are entering.
  2. Close nearby windows and doors, and move pets indoors away from the flight path.
  3. Mark the outside entry point from a distance so the pest pro can find the wall void.
  4. Call pest control promptly, especially if anyone is allergic, stings are occurring indoors, or the nest is near an entry.

Do not do this

  • Do not seal the entry hole while the colony is active; insects may move indoors.
  • Do not spray household insecticide into wall cavities, outlets, or soffits from a ladder.
  • Do not swat or vacuum wasps indoors if people with sting allergies are present.

Who to call

  1. Call 911 if anyone is injured, trapped, in medical distress, or if fire, shock, collapse, or active crime is present.
  2. Call the utility emergency line before private repair when gas, electric service, public water, sewer main, or buried lines may be involved.
  3. Call a qualified pest-control or wildlife professional after immediate life-safety and utility hazards are controlled.

Damage mitigation

  • If a sting causes breathing trouble, throat swelling, faintness, or widespread hives, call 911.
  • Keep interior lights low near the room at night so insects are less drawn inside.
  • After treatment, have damaged siding, trim gaps, or wall openings sealed.

Prevention

  • Seal siding gaps, utility penetrations, fascia openings, and torn screens after nests are inactive or removed.
  • Keep outdoor trash sealed and clean food residue near patios and grills.
  • Schedule early-season inspection where nests recur near entries or rooflines.

Typical cost band

Usually low to moderate for treatment; higher if wall, siding, or soffit repairs are needed.

Insurance note

Pest treatment is typically maintenance, but wall damage from removal should be documented with photos and the pest-control invoice.
