Home emergency playbook

Siding blown off with water entering

Conservative first steps for homeowners before cleanup, repair, or contractor dispatch. When safety is uncertain, leave and call first.

Immediate steps

  1. Stay inside until wind, lightning, and flying debris have passed.
  2. From the ground, identify exposed sheathing, torn housewrap, loose trim, and any water entering around outlets or windows.
  3. Cover interior belongings near the exposed wall and place towels at sill or baseboard leaks.
  4. Call a siding contractor for temporary weatherproofing and repair once exterior access is safe.

Do not do this

  • Do not climb a ladder in gusty wind to nail panels back.
  • Do not drive nails or screws blindly into walls where wiring, plumbing, or flashing may be hidden.
  • Do not tear off additional housewrap or flashing to make a tarp fit.

Who to call

  1. Call 911 if anyone is injured, trapped, in medical distress, or if fire, shock, collapse, or active crime is present.
  2. Call the utility emergency line before private repair when gas, electric service, public water, sewer main, or buried lines may be involved.
  3. Call a qualified siding contractor after immediate life-safety and utility hazards are controlled.

Damage mitigation

  • Photograph missing courses, bent starter strips, exposed fasteners, and interior wet spots before temporary cover.
  • Use contractor-installed wrap, tape, or panels that shed water without trapping it behind the wall.
  • Save loose siding pieces if they show manufacturer, color, profile, or wind damage.

Prevention

  • Repair loose starter strips, missing J-channel, and cracked trim before storm season.
  • Keep trees and stored objects from striking siding during high winds.
  • Use manufacturer-compatible fasteners and expansion gaps during repairs.

Typical cost band

Usually moderate for temporary weatherproofing; high when roof decking, insulation, ceilings, or interiors are wet.

Insurance note

Wind damage claims often need photos of all elevations, matching issues, and temporary weatherproofing receipts before permanent replacement.
