Oven or range will not turn off
Conservative first steps for homeowners before cleanup, repair, or contractor dispatch. When safety is uncertain, leave and call first.
Immediate steps
- Turn the oven or range control to OFF and keep combustibles away from burners and the oven door.
- For electric ranges, switch off the labeled range breaker from dry footing if the appliance stays hot.
- For gas ranges, use the appliance shutoff only if it is reachable without heat, flame, or gas odor; otherwise leave and call the gas utility or 911.
- Call appliance repair after the appliance is off or responders have made it safe.
Do not do this
- Do not leave the home with an oven or burner heating uncontrolled.
- Do not throw water on a grease or electrical oven fire.
- Do not move a hot range and risk kinking a gas connector or pulling wiring.
Who to call
- Call 911 if anyone is injured, trapped, in medical distress, or if fire, shock, collapse, or active crime is present.
- Call the utility emergency line before private repair when gas, electric service, public water, sewer main, or buried lines may be involved.
- Call a qualified appliance repair technician after immediate life-safety and utility hazards are controlled.
Damage mitigation
- Remove nearby towels, paper, oils, and plastic utensils after the heat source is controlled.
- Ventilate smoke only after fire risk is gone and no gas odor is present.
- Photograph control display errors, knob position, scorched items, and model tag for repair.
Prevention
- Replace sticky knobs, failing control boards, and damaged burner switches before they stick on.
- Keep combustibles away from ranges even when appliances are off.
- Know which breaker or gas valve serves the range before an emergency.

Usually moderate for controls or igniters; high if wiring, cabinets, smoke damage, or replacement is needed.
