Material calculator
Sod calculator — pallets & rolls
Estimate sod pallets and rolls from lawn area. The waste control should be 5% for rectangular lawns or 10% for irregular yards with curves and bed edges.
You'll need
3 pallets
Sod pallets
- Sod rolls
- 105 rolls
- Area with waste
- 1,050 sq ft
What this assumes
- 1000 ft² × (1 + 5%) ÷ 450 ft² per pallet.
- Roll count uses the standard planning value of about 10 ft² per roll.
Coverage rates & sources
Every number this calculator uses is a published engineering constant — not an estimate we made up. Here is exactly what it assumes and where each value comes from.
- Sod pallet coverage: 450–500 ft²/pallet (default 450)Source: Sod Solutions / sod-farm standard (most pallets 450–500 ft²)
- Sod roll coverage: ~10 ft²/rollSource: Standard sod roll/slab size
- Rectangular waste: 5%Source: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension recommendation
- Irregular-shape waste: 10%Source: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension (curves/corners)
Before you buy
- Pallet coverage differs by sod farm; confirm whether your supplier uses 450 or 500 ft² pallets.
- Sod is perishable and should generally be installed within about 24 hours of delivery.
- Prep with about 2" of topsoil and water immediately; irregular yards and many bed edges waste more.
This is a planning estimate, not a substitute for a pro's on-site measurement. For load-bearing, structural, or code-regulated work, confirm quantities with a licensed contractor.
