Federal IRA tax credits ended after 2025
The §25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit and §25D Residential Clean Energy Credit ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (Pub. L. 119-21). Heat pumps, high-efficiency AC and furnaces, insulation, heat-pump water heaters, and solar installed in 2026 or later can no longer claim them — don't let a contractor quote a federal credit that no longer exists. Focus on the utility rebates below.
AEP Ohio energy-efficiency rebates
AEP Ohio has historically rebated heat pumps, smart thermostats (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell), heat-pump water heaters, and home EV chargers. Amounts and eligibility change — verify the current offer and submit at aepohio.com/save.
Columbia Gas of Ohio rebates
Columbia Gas of Ohio has historically rebated high-efficiency furnaces (95% AFUE+), tankless water heaters, and smart/programmable thermostats. Amounts and eligibility change — verify the current offer and submit at columbiagasohio.com/rebates.
Income-qualified DOE Home Energy Rebates
Some households below 80% of area median income may qualify for state-administered DOE Home Energy Rebates (HOMES / HEEHRA). These are separate from the expired federal tax credits, vary by state, and are subject to change — check the Ohio Department of Development or your state energy office for current availability and amounts before counting on them.
Frequently asked
Can I still stack a federal tax credit with utility rebates?
No — the federal §25C/§25D tax credits ended after December 31, 2025, so there's no federal credit left to stack for 2026 installs. State utility rebates (AEP, Columbia Gas) and any state-administered DOE Home Energy Rebates may still apply; verify each program's current rules directly.
Do I claim these or my contractor?
AEP / Columbia Gas rebates: the contractor usually submits them and credits the rebate against your invoice. Keep all invoices and Manufacturer Certification statements for any rebate program you apply to.
